Summary
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) offer valuable features and functions in civil engineering like enhancing data analysis and decision-making. According to Hutchins, A., Olsen, D., & Hamilton, J. (2024), GIS is a digital tool that uses maps to capture, store, analyze and visually share data and information related to specific locations. GIS helps to visualise accurate geospatial data, improve surveying, promote cost savings and time efficiency (ConsultANZ, 2023). However, a significant challenge faced by GIS is the presence of sensitive information, making it crucial to safeguard the data against unauthorized access and potential cyber threats. Overall, GIS provides convenience, clarity and collaboration that enables project teams to be more efficient when capturing and analyzing project data. (2024)
Thesis:
Despite its dependency on the quality of data input, GIS has proven to increase efficiency in civil engineering projects with its ability to provide engineers a comprehensive understanding of a project site in the early stages.
